•इंदिरा गांधी के 1975 के आपातकाल (Emergency) के दौरान जेलों और पुलिस थानों में दी गई यातनाएं इतनी खौफनाक थीं कि वे स्वतंत्र भारत के इतिहास का सबसे क्रूर अध्याय मानी जाती हैं।
•शाह जांच आयोग की रिपोर्ट, बंदियों की संस्मरण, किताबों और अदालती दस्तावेजों के अनुसार, इंदिरा गांधी की सरकार ने विरोध की हर आवाज को दबाने के लिए क्रूरता की सारी हदें पार कर दी थीं।
इंदिरा गांधी के आपातकाल की कुछ सबसे भयंकर और रूह कंपा देने वाली यातनाएं निम्नलिखित थीं:-
1.'द रोलर ट्रीटमेंट' (The Roller Treatment)-
•यह आपातकाल की सबसे कुख्यात शारीरिक यातनाओं में से एक थी।
•इसमें बंदी को जमीन पर सीधा लिटा दिया जाता था और उसके पैरों व शरीर पर लकड़ी या लोहे के भारी रोलर (बेलन) रखकर उन पर पुलिसकर्मी खड़े हो जाते थे।
•इससे बंदी की हड्डियां और मांसपेशियां पूरी तरह कुचल जाती थीं, लेकिन बाहर कोई खून या घाव नहीं दिखता था।
•कई लोग इसके कारण जीवनभर के लिए अपाहिज हो गए।
2.बर्बर शारीरिक अंग-भंग और प्रताड़ना- नाखून उखाड़ना:-
•पूछताछ के नाम पर राजनीतिक कार्यकर्ताओं और संघ (RSS) के स्वयंसेवकों के हाथों और पैरों के नाखून प्लास से खींच लिए जाते थे।
•गुप्तांगों पर बिजली के झटके: बंदियों को नग्न करके उनके नाजुक अंगों और कानों पर बिजली के तार बांधकर करंट के झटके दिए जाते थे।
•जलती सिगरेट और मोमबत्ती से दागना: कबूलनामे के लिए कैदियों की पीठ, जांघों और संवेदनशील अंगों को जलती हुई सिगरेट या पिघलते मोम से दागा जाता था।

• The tortures inflicted in jails and police stations during Indira Gandhi's 1975 Emergency were so horrific that they are considered the cruellest chapter in independent India's history.
• According to the Shah Commission report, prisoners' memoirs, books, and court documents, Indira Gandhi's government crossed every limit of cruelty to suppress every voice of dissent.
• Some of the most horrifying and soul-chilling tortures of Indira Gandhi's Emergency were as follows:
1. 'The Roller Treatment'
• This was one of the most notorious physical tortures of the Emergency.
• In this, the prisoner was laid flat on the ground and a heavy wooden or iron roller was placed on his legs and body, with policemen standing on it.
This would completely crush the prisoner's bones and muscles, but no blood or wounds would be visible from outside.
• Many people became permanently disabled because of this.
2. Barbaric physical mutilation and torture - Nail extraction:
• In the name of interrogation, the fingernails and toenails of political activists and RSS volunteers were pulled out with pliers.
• Electric shocks to genitals: Prisoners were stripped naked and electric wires were tied to their sensitive organs and ears, and shocks were administered.
• Branding with burning cigarettes and candles: To extract confessions, prisoners' backs, thighs, and sensitive organs were branded with burning cigarettes or melting wax.
